Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon) establishes a special relationship with Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn), a prisoner on death row in Louisiana, acting as his spiritual advisor after carrying on correspondence with him. After his final appeal for life in prison instead of death by lethal injection is denied, Sister Helen works with Matthew to help him find redemption.
